01. Lack Of Common-Sense
There is no common sense in computer and this is one of the major limitations of computer. They cannot make sound and prudent decisions based on a simple assumption of a situation or facts. For example, read the following sentence given below;
"Rahul is red and the flower he is holding is a nice person."
If we write this sentence in words, the computer will not display any error. However, anyone would say that this sentence is false. It is based on common sense only. The correct sentence should be as below.
"Rahul is a nice person and the flower in his hand is red."
02. No IQ
This is another main limitation of computers. Computers lack the intelligence quotient (IQ); They usually have zero IQ. In simple words, the computer cannot see or think of a specific action according to the corresponding situation.
Everything, whatever a computer can do, is already programmed into a computer, no matter how easy or complex the task may be. Computers have gotten smarter over time because they have given more instructions programmatically. If we try to do a particular task which is not programmed in the computer, then the computer will not perform that task.
03. No Feelings
The computer is still a machine and therefore has no emotion. Unlike humans, computers do not feel anything. They lack emotion. Despite many great inventions in computers, the human heart is still not developed for computers.
Any person will feel tired after working for a few hours continuously. On the other hand, computers don't get tired. They can work continuously for hours with the same accuracy and speed.
04. No Thinking Capability
Computers cannot think of themselves, which restricts them to do any work on their own. They are machines in which instructions are stored or programmed to perform specific tasks. Computers do not work by thinking on their own, they are given instructions. Otherwise, they are just boxes.
Humans have developed algorithms to make computers act like humans, such as voice input/output support in Siri or Google Speech. But this concept still relies on stored instructions and is commonly referred to as Artificial Intelligence.
05. No Decision-Making Ability
Computers are unable to make decisions because they do not have the necessary elements. Decision making is a complex process that usually requires elements such as information, intelligence, knowledge, wisdom and decision-making ability. Computers lack these elements, so they are unable to make decisions. They can only work as per the instructions given by the users.
Computers can be programmed to make decisions about certain situations, which are purely process-oriented. On the other hand, man has great power to take decisions accordingly. Also, computers are dead machines when there is no power supply.
06. No Learning Power
Computers do not have the power to learn, and hence, cannot do things on their own. They have no ability to do any work based on the fact that they have done similar work before. Users have to provide data or input each time to get the desired result. Likewise, they must already be programmed to perform certain tasks.
07. User Dependents
Computers have become so smart, they still rely on the user to take input. If no data is given to the computer, it cannot process the task or provide results. Some modern computers can handle some automated and repetitive tasks on their own, however the user still needs to monitor the working process and configure the automation process by giving the correct data.
08. No Implementation Power
Although computers can store large amounts of data and perform complex operations, they lack implementation power. This means that computers cannot implement anything on their own. Instead, only humans can set rules and policies for computers and enforce them accordingly.
Suppose we type a misspelling while writing a sentence in MS Word. This will underline the specific spelling in red (only if the Spelling & Grammar Check feature is on), which means the spelling is incorrect. Alternatively, it displays some similar suggestions of spelling that can be used in place of the wrong one. However, only we can choose the correct spelling from the given suggestion, and apply it to our sentence.
09. Computers Cannot Express Ideas
This is one of the biggest limitations of computers, where humans can perform far better than computers. New ideas can play an important role in improvement and innovation for any research. Since computers operate on programmed instructions and given data, they have no idea of their own. Therefore, computers cannot express ideas.
10. Made For Knowledgeable Audience
When it comes to operating a computer, a knowledgeable listener is required. Although it is so easy to operate a computer for basic tasks, it is necessary to learn something basic. Despite this, an IT specialist or programmer may be required to work on some complex tasks.
11. GIGO
Gigo stands for Garbage In Garbage Out. Computers and machines depend on humans to present the input and after further processing the computer generates the output which must be in human-readable form. Now suppose if the input given to them is invalid and wrong then you can imagine that the output which is received will be invalid and wrong.
It is therefore advisable to double-check the inputs rather than blaming the machine before giving some instructions and commands to the computer afterwards. So if you get a faulty output, double check the input you submitted to the computer system.
12. Virus Threats
A computer virus is a program or set of code that is prepared, designed and written by a computer programmer to infect other computers locally or in a computer network. They are capable of contaminating and infecting other computers by duplicating or reproducing themselves as a natural biological virus.
Computer viruses can replicate themselves and infect individual computers in shocking ways and can hide and attack aggressively when exposed to "HOST", without the computer user or client being aware. Huh. A computer virus is capable of replicating itself in loops which can freeze or shut down the computer system and cause the computer to stop responding to the booting process.
Many such files or codes are created and written in such a way that they seriously harm the computer system by formatting or deleting important operating system from hard disk which are responsible for booting the computer. They are spread when the infected media comes in contact with other media used and hence the infection is spread.
Do You Know?
The first known computer virus was developed in 1986 by two Pakistani brothers from Lahore and was named "Brain Virus".
This limitation of computer has created panic in the computer world for decades. Computer viruses can be classified into the following types;
System Virus
File Virus
Boot Sector Or Boot Record virus
It is strongly advised to buy legit antivirus software and update regularly also periodic scan of hard disk for viruses is necessary and never use other media before scan.
13. Hardware Problem
Since the computer is a machine, it is bound to have hardware issues that need to be resolved as the problem arises in some cases where troubleshooting is required, requiring a professional advice which is costly. It has also been observed that the availability of hardware devices can be estimated due to the lack of manufacturing and production of that particular equipment.
14. Network Problems
Network problems are very common in computers, they often lose their connectivity and all the networks suddenly shut down where all the work, operations and jobs have to be stopped forcibly. These limitations of computer systems are becoming bare in the last few decades.
15. Needs Regular Updates & Upgrades
We only know that the computer industry is the fastest growing industry, with new inventions and innovations happening on a daily basis. Computer technology is advancing at a rapid pace, the quality and capacity of hardware devices is increasing day by day and the software world has to be on its toes to face the expectations.
It is recently observed that a newer version of software is not compatible with older versions of hardware devices and vice versa. Hence updating and upgrading of computer systems is essential to survive in the competitive environment.
16. Data Machine Readable
Computer data is read by the machine, that is, the data received from the computer can be read by the computer itself.
17. Power Dependency
Desktop computers require a power supply to start up to their full potential and function properly. PC depends on a lot of power to perform its primary functions.
There is no doubt that UPS ( Uninterruptible Power Supply ) is available as a backup source of electricity but still, it is considered as a major limitation of computer and shortcoming of computer system as there is heavy reliance on electricity.
Similarly, laptops don't require an AC power supply, they get their share of power from the batteries installed in them and these batteries need to recharge themselves to provide a backup source of electricity to run the laptop for operation. Is required.
